Because land was cheaper in Northwest Indiana than Chicago, he rented a spot there in an old auto garage and went to work as Three Floyds Brewing. He started with a tiny brewing system, threw tons of hops into his beer — it was the flavorful stuff he wanted to drink — and persuaded a few Chicago bars to put it on tap. Now it's 16 years later, and Three Floyds in truth isn't that much bigger.
While breweries of similar age have blanketed the nation, Three Floyds distributes only in Chicago, Indiana, Milwaukee, Madison, Louisville and occasionally Ohio. Yet it has been named best brewery in the world five of the last seven years. It is responsible for one of the biggest annual events in craft beer: Saturday's one-day release of its Dark Lord imperial stout, which will draw 6, fanatics from across the nation to erect lawn chairs outside the Munster, Ind.
Tickets for this year's Dark Lord Day sold out in four minutes before appearing on resale websites at 10 times the cost. In January the Three Floyds frenzy reached new levels with the release of Zombie Dust, a pale ale that had people screeching to a stop in the brewery parking lot and running — literally running — in to buy the beer by the case.
They sold close to 1, cases that day — that's 24, bottles — which Floyd said was like watching a cartoon: As Three Floyds filled cases of Zombie Dust, people bought them. How did it get to this? How has a brewery in an office park 30 miles south of downtown Chicago whipped up such mania? Even Floyd barely knows. Not very cloudy. Lemon dominates. Slightly hazed off yellows pour. Floral hops, some funk and sours. Pretty good. Light body, wheat takes a backseat to ample hops in Gumballhead.
