Wednesday, September 24, What is Cartridge Paper? Do you know what cartridge paper is or why it's called cartridge paper? I came across an article this morning while writing a Product review: The Derwent Safari Journal - the Journal uses cartridge paper! It was so intriguing I started to look for more references as I always get questions from people in the USA whenever I use the term cartridge paper. I often draw in my drawing classes on good quality acid free cartridge paper.

It typically comes in weights between gsm and gsm. OTOH, cartridge paper is pretty common and comes in different types both sides extremely smooth, to one side not smooth, to both sides not smooth; from gsm to over gsm; brilliant white to creamy ivory in color.

I have tested the cartridge papers here and they are all around pH The roughest is passable for technical pens and fine for watercolor. Can someone who has used both, please explain? I like the Bristol board I have… more expensive than cartridge, thicker, smooth. The main advantages it offers a penman are — 1. It is hard a sharp dip pen will not scratch , dig into or catch on the surface nor pick up bits of fibre from the surface of the paper.

You can lay down very large solid black ink sections without the board cockling or distorting in any way. You can use light washes of dilute ink or watercolour too. What else does any pen person want of paper? A cheaper paper is all I can think of. Cartridge paper or Drawing paper US is such a wide catch all term so as to make it almost meaningless! Cheers Mike. Thanks Maureen and Mike!

Mike, especially, for a very thorough answer! So if I understand correctly, bristol has the plaster of paris, while cartridge does not. It might even be that it has gypsum as a filler. Not that I do any finished pen drawings…. Any idea of the quality of gsm Fabriano Bristol board? It is just finding it! This equals the weight of one square metre of the paper. The lighter pad with gsm paper is perfect with use pencils and charcoal.

The heavyweight pad is gsm and is also great for pencils and charcoal but the heavier weight means you can even use watercolours and acrylics. Both pads are extremely white, which is important if you want to be able to scan your finished work without it looking grey. Our watercolour paper is cold-pressed, so it's slightly textured. It comes in a gummed pad and bound depending on how you like to work. Made from virgin wood pulp, it's acid-free and calcium carbonate-buffered to prevent colour deterioration and has high water absorbency and a hard surface that makes it easy to erase.

This Cass Art Jumbo Watercolour Gummed Pad contains 50 sheets of heavyweight gsm paper and, like all our own-brand items, represents outstanding value. These postcard-sized pads contain 15 sheets of good-quality gsm watercolour paper, each measuring mm x mm — a handy size that's particularly suitable when you're out and about and don't want to lug a larger pad around.

This is a very fun exercise and something explored at art school. It was one of my favorite projects to do! If you want to trace something with it, it will be very hard, unless you have a light table. Another option is to get some tracing paper. Personally, I like to have a smaller sketchbook with me, so I can bring it with me wherever I go and then a bigger one, generally A4 that stays at home. On one hand, a bigger canvas gives you more space and more freedom to move around. It can be very helpful for a beginner since it helps you better to learn the movements and dynamics of drawing.

On the other hand, you might feel too intimidated with a canvas that big and if so, do try smaller spaces first and grow from there. Now for the prices, it mostly depends on the weight and size of paper.
