Two Bluesfest volunteers say the new setup for leaving drinks outside the festival smoking area could leave concertgoers vulnerable to sexual predators. Timmy Blais and his sister Tammie Blais, both volunteers with Bluesfest for about half a decade, say regulations about alcohol in the smoking area mean festival attendees must leave unfinished drinks on a table near the entrance, and the Blais siblings say they fear someone else could spike those drinks with an incapacitating drug.

On one of their nights off, when they were using the smoking area as festival attendees, more than a dozen open drinks were on the table, they say. I just think something needs to be done, something to keep people safe.

On Thursday, Bluesfest posted a sign warning those with open drinks not to leave them unsupervised, suggesting they instead finish their drinks before going for a smoke and mentioning a by-law that forbids food and drink inside the smoking area. This is only the second season when Bluesfest has had a designated smoking section; previously, if someone wanted to smoke, they had to leave the festival grounds.

Bluesfest executive director Mark Monahan said the smoking area was introduced partly to try to draw smokers away from concert areas. Timmy Blais said he spoke Tuesday with a volunteer supervisor, who then raised the issue with the festival board.
